Collings CJ

The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is a slope shouldered dreadnought which has a very different sound character to Collings square shouldered guitars. The CJ offers a very rich, warm and deep sound, and an overall greater smoothness of tone, but not quite as much of the sharp edge found in the upper and lower registers of the square shouldered guitars.

Collings guitars are hand-built in Austin, Texas, by a committed and dedicated workforce

Collings guitars are considered by many experts and enthusiasts alike, to be the ultimate. Collings guitars are hand-built in Austin, Texas, by a committed and dedicated workforce, who strive to achieve what we would have liked to have seen from so called 'Golden Era' instruments from larger, well known American manufacturers. This is evident simply in the painstaking care taken in constructing the guitar, all timbers are air dried for many years before they begin work, the neck joint and top braces are completely cut by hand. This level of construction, combined with the very best choices of wood, and finished in traditional nitrocellulose or optional shellac lacquer, adds up to a truly stunning guitar. We have several Collings guitars in stock, and always have more on order, please give us a call to discuss your requirements further.

Collings OM2H Adirondack Bracing

The OM2H is our most popular Collings Guitar, it is based on a vintage Martin OM28, built to Collings exacting standards of quality and tone. This guitar has the upgrade to Adirondack Spruce braces, which adds stiffness to the top. This gives the guitar a springier and more elastic response, with excellent harmonics and overtones, without the expense and long play in time of a full Adirondack top guitar. Combined with finest Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood, this is a truly stunning small bodied guitar.

C10 Adirondack Bracing

The Collings C10 is based on a small bodied Gibson, similar to Robert Johnson’s L1. This guitar however, has all solid construction, featuring Honduran Mahogany and Sitka Spruce, with Adirondack Bracing on the Sitka Spruce top. This adds volume, tone and projection, without the expense and additional stiffness of an Adirondack top, this guitar will respond when picked lightly or strummed harder.  The neck on the C10 is a very comfortable ‘Vintage C’ profile, which supports the hand without feeling cumbersome.  For anyone wanting a fantastic blues and ragtime guitar, the C10 has it licked.

0002H Adirondack Bracing

Collings D1A Adirondack

This is one of Collings' most popular guitars in the US market, and it's easy to see why. It combines genuine Honduras mahogany with old growth Adirondack spruce. Adirondack is the rarest species of spruce, it comes from a Douglas Fir tree sourced from specific elevations to give the required grain, and hence stiffness. This gives the guitar a loud, powerful and 'chiming' sound. Unlike rosewood guitars, which are often referred to as 'piano like', this could be described as 'bell like', in terms of the immediacy of the midrange. This guitar would be ideal for country guitar, and many other genres of acoustic music.

SJ Sunburst Pre Owned

The Collings SJ is based on a Gibson J185, combining a Jumbo body shape with a Flamed Maple Back, Sides and neck, with a Sitka Spruce Top.  The SJ has a 16” lower bout which is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides are almost as deep, but with a tighter curved waist  creates a unique sound chamber. The Maple SJ has a very pronounced midrange response compared to a dreadnought, with a good amount  of cutting projection and upper register harmonic clarity. This example is finished in Collings’ Full Body Sunburst, which is one of the most lustrous in the business. Collings mix each sunburst finish to complement the natural colour of the timber and very labour intensively applied by hand. After each sunburst guitar, Collings will clean the spray shop. This makes the finish an expensive option on a new instrument, and makes this guitar represent fantastic value used. If you are looking for an ideal guitar for ensemble and solo playing, with a gorgeous deep C profile neck in flamed mahogany, the SJ is a superb choice.

Collings OM1A Adirondack

The Collings OM1A is one of the best sounding guitars Collings makes, according to Bill Collings. Whilst it may appear a small, plain looking instrument, it has a very rich and sweet tone, with the balance of an OM, but is very powerful, due to the Adirondack spruce top. The Honduran mahogany back and sides gives the guitar an immediate response, with excellent string separation. This is a true players’ guitar.

The Collings D1 is the ‘Starting Point’ in the Collings line, and represents a fantastic all round instrument, combining the 14 fret Dreadnought body shape with a Solid Honduran Mahogany back and sides, with a Solid Sitka Spruce Top. The D1 delivers a loud and powerful tone, with a strong, sweet midrange, classic of a good mahogany dreadnought. This guitar has an easy, sweet response, courtesy of it’s Sitka Spruce top and braces, which produces a more rounded tone than the Adirondack spruce found on the D1A. For someone wanting to enter into Collings ownership, the D1 would be the ideal guitar.

Collings 0001

The Collings 0001 combines a Sitka Spruce top with a Honduran Mahogany back and sides. This classic timber combination on the 000 12 fret body shape makes an excellent ragtime and blues guitar. The choice of mahogany gives a snappier, drier, punchier tone, than the glassier tone from a rosewood backed 0002H. This example was ordered with ivoroid body binding, as opposed to the usual tortoise, to really set it apart.
